A Short but noisy visit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a brief stop on the first day of the 2021 election campaign at the Black Cat in Cobourg before a cheering and jeering crowd. At least two hundred supporters and protesters showed up to greet Trudeau, pressing tightly in on the sidewalk patio in front of the restaurant.

“It’s an incredible pleasure to be back here in Cobourg, to see so many people out!” said Trudeau.

After making his rounds to greet supporters on the patio, and barely audible above the crowd, Trudeau introduced Alison Lester (in the red dress) as the Liberal candidate for Northumberland-Peterborough South. Lester, born and raised in Cobourg, is a lawyer and active as a volunteer in the community with the Westben Festival Arts Theatre and the Northumberland Hospital Foundation’s Planned Giving Committee.

To those in the crowd protesting pandemic precautions and COVID-19 vaccinations, he said, “You have your opportunity to make your voices heard. But so do all of us other Canadians!”
