Messages for Families in Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit Jurisdiction

From Desk of KPR Director of Education Rita Russo

Yesterday,  Thurs., Feb. 11, 2021, Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced that March Break will be delayed for schools across Ontario until April, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Our March Break, which was originally scheduled for March 15-19, has been delayed for a month and will now take place from April 12-16. This means that schools will be open to students and staff through all of March.

The new break schedule applies to both in-person and virtual learners. We recognize also that Friday, March 12 is currently a board holiday. We are reviewing this date in light of this announcement and will confirm our plan as soon as possible.

The pandemic we are living through has had an undeniable strain on our students, families and staff. We extend our sincere thanks again to staff and families for the incredible job they have done in navigating, at every turn, new ways to teach and learn in our changing world.

This has been a difficult journey, and we recognize the importance of the traditional March Break as a significant opportunity for students, staff and families to refresh and recover physically and mentally.

At the same time, we know our students and families are very pleased, as we are, to have all our schools back to in-person learning for the first time this week since the winter break.

We empathize with our families, students and staff who are disappointed by this news, but recognize and appreciate that public health considerations must come first at this time. Provincial medical authorities believe the best course of action right now is to postpone the March Break until April.

We continue to monitor all provincial announcements and will share any further news as soon as we are able.

From Desk of  PVNCC Director of Education Joan Carragher

The following letter has been sent to all families in the Board following yesterday’s, Thurs., Feb. 11, 20201,  Minister of Education announcement that March Break will be delayed until April 12-16.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you are likely aware, the Ontario Minister of Education has announced that March Break will be delayed until April as part of the government’s ongoing effort to control the spread of COVID-19.

As such, all schools in Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board will remain open March 15-19. The Ministry of Education has rescheduled the break to take place April 12 to 16.

Please note, the previously scheduled Board designated holiday on Friday, March 12 will go ahead as planned.

We recognize that March Break provides much needed rest, relaxation and a mental health recharge for our students and their families.

We’d like to direct students and families to our COVID-19 Mental Health Resources and our collection of community-based resources including Kids Help Phone, which offers 24/7 counselling and referral services across the province. To use this free resource, children can call 1-800-668-6868, or text CONNECT to 686868. School Mental Health Ontario provides excellent mental health resources year-round for students, parents and families.

This continues to be a very challenging school year and I want to thank all of our parents, guardians and families for their flexibility and support.

We hope and pray that the government’s ongoing efforts to control the virus are successful and that we can look forward to a return to some form of normalcy this spring and beyond.
